What is geographic atrophy?

Geographic atrophy (often abbreviated as GA) is the advanced form of dry, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. It harms the macula, the central part of the eye, responsible for detailed vision. As GA progresses, damaged areas called lesions grow, leading to a permanent hazy spot in the center of vision, in some patients.
